Glebe Rangers (N)

1st Team
O'Gorman Cup
Fri 19th May - 7:15pm
Wakehurst made the short trip to Chimney Corner’s Allen Park in Antrim for the final of the O’Gorman Cup against Ballymoney side Glebe Rangers.
In three previous meetings this season, the sides played out a 2-2 draw in league action at Mill Meadow in August before Rangers eliminated Wakehurst from the McReynolds Cup with a 2-1 win in early December. The final game of the season saw Wakehurst clinch runners up spot in the league with a 2-1 with at the Riada Stadium on 3rd May - so everything was set up for a pulsating final.
Glebe started off much the better side and dominated proceedings for the first half an hour with a succession of free kicks and corners coming in from dangerous areas and it took Rangers to have a goal disallowed to spring Wakehurst in to action and finished the first half on a slightly more even keel, creating a couple of chances but the sides went in goalless at half time.
Half Time: Wakehurst 0-0 Glebe Rangers
We came out a lot stronger in the second period and opened the scoring on 52 minutes when a long throw from the right from Stewart Nixon in to the box was flicked on by captain Ryan Bamber and his header looped over Chris Fullerton in the Glebe net to make it advantage Wakehurst.
The game flowed from end to end with both sides creating chances for the next 25 minutes but good hands from Andy Findlay and solid defensive work prevented the Ballymoney side levelling, while we lost both full backs to injury, firstly Kurtis McCartney followed by Niall Swann who were replaced by Aaran Weir and Nicky Black.
We had opportunities to grab a second as Lee McClelland and Zach Barr couldn’t find the net after great work from Nixon.
Glebe penned us in for a period near the end as terrific defending from centre half pairing Peter McClure and Kyle Crawford coupled with an unbelievable last ditch challenge from Andy Laughlin as a Glebe midfielder was about to pull the trigger from just inside the box kept Rangers out.
As the game headed in to the fifth minute of injury time, a clearance found Stewart Nixon running through on the counter and the youngster calmly found the net for his 21st goal of the season, making it 2-0 as the referee blew the final whistle straight away.
League chairman Ian Shiels presented the trophy to Ryan Bamber to finish off the season in the best possible way.
